Spasa on Berestov
In the end of the XI- XII cc. in the village of Berestove, where was situated the residence of Kiev princes, according to the initiative of Vladimir Monomach was built stone church of Saviour. In the chronicles it was metioned as burial vault of the Monomach kin. In 1138 there were intered the daughter of Prince Monomach- Evfimiya,in 1157 - the founder of Moscow - Yuriy Dolgorukiy and his son Gleb. The church endured through a lot of events: earthquake in XIII c., invasions, anti orthodox decree in 1481 - that prohibited to restore and repair orthodox temples,the invasion of Tatar khan Mengly-Girey in 1482. In the begining of the XVI c. temple proceeded to the hands of members of the Uniat Church and became a parish church. In the 40th of XVII c.,early destroyed church was restored by Kiev's metropolitan Peter Migyla. After the restoration - the ancient utility gained an exterior look of ukrainian cruciformed church and existed through without any changes for almost 50 years. The structure of the ancient temple saved it's ancient walls.The entrance to the church was made through three-tier belfry, wich was built in 1814 according to the project of A. Melenskiy. In 1947 the temple was restored.Nowdays the church appears as cruciformed five-domed building. The great part of ancient foundations which were not used - was also preserved and settled as museum monument.In the 1982 the restoration was completed. In 2001 the Institute of the Architectural Preservation (Getty's) gaved the grant on the support of preparing to the restoration of the church of the Saviour at the Berestove.The works that provided by International "Getty" program - are headed for conservation of the church of the Saviour at the Berestove as the great monument of Ukraine.
